The early roots of the hot rod began with racing. The engine of choice for a hot rodder was the Ford Flathead V-8. Ford Parts, such as transmissions and rear ends, were adaptable and cheap, plus Ford cars were readily available. The Ford V-8 Flathead engine was used extensively up until the mid-1950s. Speed equipment manufacturers were able to offer special parts because of the high interchangeability between parts. The drive train was exchangeable from year to year. The American V-8 has become an icon in itself and the sound emmitted from a Hot Rod Flathead at top speed is music to many ears.
