Dan would start the third M8B from last place wearing the number 1 plate. On the first lap, he would pass 12 cars. After the first lap, it was quite apparent where the number 1 M8B was headed. Each lap, Dan would pass fewer cars, being careful, feeling the car out, and not risking breaking it. By the 16th lap, Dan was in fourth place with only the 0 Porsche of Siffert separating him from the other two factory McLarens. On lap 20, Siffert’s Porsche would slow as the third McLaren thundered by. There they were, the mighty McLarens running 1-2-3. It was Bruce’s turn to win, so Denny eased back on the throttle and let him. At the same time the crowd of 22,000 spectators were on their feet yelling “Go Dan!” But, Dan settled for third place.
